Hours after having locked up the Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback position, Michael Vick is now openly plotting strategy.
In an effort to avoid big hits and thus more chances of injury, Vick told ESPN he plans to run the ball more and he feels new coach Chip Kelly’s offense will afford him the opportunity.
"I will be a threat," he told ESPN. "I'm going to have my opportunities to do the things I like to do within this offense, and to run the football. That's exciting."
In the final several seasons of former longtime coach Andy Reid’s regime, Vick attempted to be more of a pocket passer. In Kelly's option-based offense, he will surely be able to run the ball more often. With that in mind, Vick said he added weight and muscle in this offseason. He also worked to strengthen his legs to prepare for running the ball more.
That much was evidenced in an impromptu 40-yard dash he was challenged to by 24-year-old star running back LeSean McCoy last May. Vick blitzed the speedy McCoy with time to spare. "I tested myself with Shady," said the 33-year-old veteran. "I passed that test, so I'll outrun linebackers and safeties."
After an exhaustive preseason competition, Kelly tabbed Vick the starter over Nick Foles in a battle to be the team’s signal caller.
