The Milwaukee Bucks have signed center Larry Sanders to a four-year, $44 million extension, according to ESPN.

After the team lost its starting backcourt of Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings this offseason, the 6-foot-11 Sanders is viewed as a critical piece in the Bucks rebuilding effort. Sanders averaged 9.8 points and 9.5 rebounds in 71 games last season. He also averaged 2.8 blocks, second best in the league.

“By combining his God-given ability with hard work and determination, Larry has developed into one of the top young defensive players in the league,” Bucks GM John Hammond said in a statement. “He is a very important part of what we’re doing in Milwaukee, and we’re excited to announce his extension.”

Sanders, 24, sounded equally excited about the opportunity. “Can’t believe I’ve been granted this opportunity to represent Milwaukee for the next five years and hopefully the rest of my career,” he wrote on Instagram. “Words cannot explain my gratitude for the Bucks organization and the faith in me as a leader and a worker. I won’t let you down Mil-Town.”

To replace Ellis and Jennings, the Bucks have added O.J. Mayo, 25, and Brandon Knight, 21. Mayo averaged 15 point and four assists in Dallas last season and Knight averaged 13 points and four assists in Detroit.
