Caroline Wozniacki has come a long way since being portrayed as a sympathetic figure in the publicized breakup with former fiancé Rory McIlroy.
Whether that's been a positive for Wozniacki is subject to debate.
Serena Williams' return to dominance coincided with Caroline Wozniacki's friendship
BBC.com reported that the Danish tennis player lost in the second round at the Rogers Cup to Swiss player Belinda Bencic 7-5, 7-5, then lashed out at WTA officials for forcing her to play with a nagging calf injury.
She played with her left calf heavily taped.
Caroline Wozniacki freaks out over questions of her upcoming Wimbledon foe
"I want to be able to play my best tennis and you're not going to do that if you don't practice," Wozniacki said after the match. "But the rules are if you're a top-10 player, that this was my commitment tournament, you're forced to play.
"If you don't, you get huge money fines. You get zero points to your ranking ... which is crazy.
"The WTA is all about, 'we want the players healthy, we want them to play at their best level at every tournament and we want to make it tough for them.'
"That's good, but the fact that they're pushing you to play whenever, if you are not feeling 100 percent, is not OK."
The WTA responded to Wozniacki's comments, saying it was confident its schedule "strikes the proper balance" between keeping players "healthy and rested" and pleasing fans.
It said: "Players choose the schedule that suits them best and they receive incentives to appear in a certain number of tournaments.
"Unless we allow unlimited withdrawals, which would cause an uproar for fans, there is really no better or more fair way to structure a schedule."
Wozniacki has been subject of criticism in the past for tweeting support of two different PGA Tour golfers at major events in which McIlroy was competing.
She also had an issue at Wimbledon with a reporter who was asking her about her next opponent, asking the reporter whether they were at her opponent's news conference or hers.
