David DeJesus will show up to Wrigley Field for Monday's game as usual, only this time he'll be in the visitor's dugout sporting a Washington Nationals uniform.
According to CBS Sports, the Cubs traded DeJesus, 33, to Chicago Monday afternoon for a player to be named later.
The Cubs (53-70) are at the bottom of the National League Central and are 19 games behind the division-leading Pittsburgh Pirates, while the Nationals (60-63) sit in second place in the National League East, 15.5 games behind the first place Atlanta Braves and 9.5 games behind the second wildcard spot held by the Cincinnatti Reds.
DeJesus isn't in tonight's starting lineup against his old club, but it will be interesting to see if he comes in as a pinch-hitter or defensive replacement later in the game.
In 84 games with Chicago this season, DeJesus is hitting .250 with six homeruns and 27 RBIs. Now, he'll sit in the dugout supporting the Nationals in their effort to defeat the Cubs.
It was a curious move for the Nationals, who already boast Bryce Harper, Denard Span and Jayson Werth in the outfield. However, DeJesus is an upgrade over current fourth outfielder Roger Bernadina, who is hitting just .178 with two homeruns and six RBIs in 85 games, so perhaps the lefty will take his spot.
With the deal, the Nationals have a $6.5 million team option to pick up DeJesus for the 2014 season if they choose to do so.
Monday is the opener of a four-game set between the Cubs and the Nationals, so it seems as though DeJesus is bound to get a start against his old team at Wrigley Field this week.
