In a move probably aimed at promoting familiarity as much as camaraderie, Brooklyn Nets star guard Deron Williams is hosting players only workouts for his teammates in Los Angeles.
According to reports, newcomers Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry have all been in attendance at some point, as have fellow starters Brook Lopez and Joe Johnson.
Overall, the Nets' 2013 roster also features franchise first-year players Shaun Livingston, Alan Anderson and Andrei Kirilenko.
As team captain, Williams seems to have adopted the attitude that he will seek to lead his mates by example this season. The New York Daily News reports he coordinated similar workouts last season, but they commenced just days before the official start of training camp and were held at the team’s Brooklyn training facility.
With veterans Pierce and Garnett now in the fold, expectations are high for the Nets this season, who figure to have the added boost of new, rookie coach Jason Kidd’s enthusiasm this season.
Along with Miami, Chicago and Indiana, Brooklyn rates as the toast of the Eastern Conference this season and no one is viewed as any more crucial to their attack than Williams.
The veteran guard averaged 19 points and eight assists last season.
