The San Francisco 49ers have released troubled defensive end Aldon Smith after he was arrested early Friday for DUI, hit and run and vandalism.

Could Colin Kaepernick be at the root of Smith's frustration?

Did Russell Wilson just sign as bad a contract as Colin Kaepernick's?

TMZ Sports is reporting that multiple sources indicated Smith and Kaepernick were involved in an altercation during Tuesday's practice, with teammates having to "pull them apart." The incident could be related to rumors that the 49ers quarterback is dating Hot 97 personality Nessa, who just happens to be Smith's ex-girlfriend.

TMZ added that its sources couldn't verify whether Nessa's name came up before the altercation or if any words were exchanged.

But another report from mediatakeout.com added to the rumor mill by saying that after the practice altercation, Smith smashed Kaepernick's new Mercedes. That report has not yet been confirmed but the gravity of the situation - along with Smith's troubled history - likely made it easier for the 49ers to part ways with the defensive player.

"This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues," the team said in a statement. "Although he is no longer a member of this team, our support and concern for him will continue."

Among the issues, according to USA TODAY Sports:

"Smith, 25, spent time in a treatment facility after a DUI arrest during the 2013 season and was suspended nine games last season for multiple off-field incidents that violated the NFL's personal conduct and substance abuse policies.

"He pleaded no contest in May 2014 to three felony charges of possessing illegal assault rifles and misdemeanor DUI, stemming from separate incidents in 2012 and 2013. He was sentenced in July 2014 to 235 hours of community service and three years of probation and will spend 11 Mondays on a sheriff's work crew.

"Smith also was arrested for DUI in January 2012, though that charge was reduced to reckless driving because he qualified for a diversion program."

At least Smith no longer will interfere with Kaepernick at the 49ers practice facility, but it remains to be seen if he will be a distraction to the quarterback off the field.
