The Cowboys had the NFL’s top running game in 2014 largely based off the strength of the NFL’s top offensive line. Per FootballOutsiders.com, the Cowboys’ line ranked first in Adjusted Line Yards, but also ranked second in Open Field Yardage, a measure of how much a running back contributes to a line’s success.

Having DeMarco Murray in the fold helped Dallas’ O-line reach the heights they did, and now that he’s departed to the division-rival Eagles, the ‘Boys running back situation is in flux. Joseph Randle leads the way for now but he is unproven, and free agent veteran addition Darren McFadden could already be on thin ice.

Dallas Cowboys 2015 Fantasy Football Preview

McFadden has a lengthy history of injuries—he’s never played in more than 13 games—and this offseason is a continuation of the trend. McFadden is dealing with two hamstring injuries, and the Cowboys aren’t happy with his slow progress.

Randle excelled in limited action in 2014, chewing up 6.7 yards per attempt. He’s never been a workhorse back however, and he also carries risk with his behavior off the field. He was arrested in October 2014 for shoplifting from a mall, and then in February of this year for possession of marijuana. Yes Dallas’ line is fantastic, but the running back figures heavily into the equation as well. That’s why Randle must continue to behave and impress; it’s not out of the question for the Cowboys to bring in competition. Rookie La'El Collins says Dallas O-line will be best ever

There are a few rushers that make sense, including free agents Ray Rice, Pierre Thomas, and Chris Johnson.
