Kurt Warner says he came away impressed, but the jury still is out on Colin Kaepernick's transformation.

ESPN reported that Warner, the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player, looked in on the San Francisco 49ers quarterback as the team's training camp opened over the weekend. Warner, which ESPN reported spent six weeks training with Kaepernick over the spring, liked what he saw.

2014 loss to the St. Louis Rams fueled Colin Kaepernick's desire to improve as a pocket passer

"You're starting to see him begin to understand playing the quarterback position a little more," said Warner, in town on official business as an analyst for the NFL Network, as reported by ESPN.

"Talking to guys and the coaches out here, [it's] the ability to throw with touch, the ability to anticipate things. And some of that comes with Kap, and some comes with the guys around you where you start to trust those guys."

Colin Kaepernick's 2014 regression was due to the 49ers offensive regression, offensive coordinator says

CSNBayArea.com reported that 49ers defenders also said they noticed a significant change in Kaepernick during offseason workouts.

"I'm very optimistic about the season Colin will have this year," 49ers safety Eric Reid said. "He's been throwing the ball very well through the offseason program. A couple balls, I was like, 'Man, that was a good throw.' He's definitely been putting in the work and it shows. I'm excited.

"He's doing a number of things. He's throwing with a little more touch. Everybody knows he has a rocket and can get it into tight windows, but he's making the touch throws on the deep throws, and the ball is hanging and dropping over the DBs. It's exciting to see."

Safety Antoine Bethea added that reading Kaepernick was more difficult from the defensive backfield.

"Not telegraphing where he's going," Bethea said. "That's a key thing for a quarterback. He did a great job of that during OTAs."

ESPN, however, called Kaepernick's performance in the 49ers' first practice on Saturday "uneven," exposing a hitch at the top of his delivery. It reported that he looked sharper on Sunday, but still had some uneven moments.

"Still, he was 'sacked' and intercepted on the same play Sunday, by Aldon Smith and Tremaine Brock, respectively, in team drills.

"Kaepernick also had a pair of third-down passes knocked down, by Tony Jerod-Eddie and Ahmad Brooks."
