Cleveland Browns announcer Bernie Kosar is being raked over the coals for his controversial comments about St. Louis Rams reserve quarterback Kellen Clemens during a recent Rams vs. Browns preseason game.
As Clemens was huddled up with the offense, Kosar and his partner were talking about a trip to Nationals Park Clemens took where he attended a mass being led by the Pope. Clemens signed the Pope's miter, and the Pope reached out to Clemens' child and kissed him.
"God you're killing me. My Catholic guilt here, I'm talking and I can't stand watching him play and he does such a nice thing like that," Kosar said. He also said, "Bless me Father for I have sinned, I have to watch him the whole fourth quarter."
Rams coach Jeff Fisher was hardly amused. "I feel bad for them (the Browns) that they had someone doing the broadcast feel the need to speak that way about players, specifically on our team and coaches for that matter," Fisher said. "I'm just surprised that Bernie has such a lack of respect for players and this game. To be honest with you, I lost a lot of respect for him."
The Browns organization chastised Kosar as well, with CEO Joe Banner telling media, "We don't condone the personal and unprofessional approach that Bernie took with some of his comments during the broadcast Thursday night. We've spoken to Bernie, he understands that, and we would expect the situation is resolved moving forward. We've also reached out to the Rams organization and have shared those same sentiments."
Kosar has taken an interesting approach in response the bevy of criticism coming his way. He's not exactly doubling down on his harsh words, but insists he won't change his approach to calling games.
"I love the game so much, there's no way I'd want to disrespect or hurt, or make fun of, any players or coaches," Kosar said. "That being said, the way I look at the game and the way I like to analyze it from a football perspective, it is what it is. And again, I don't want to disrespect and hurt any of the players and coaches in the league."
