Detroit Tigers slugger Prince Fielder is in the midst of getting a divorce from his wife of eight years and the strain of it all may be taking a toll on his play.
According to Larry Brown Sports, Fielder filed for divorce back in late May in the couple’s off season home state of Florida. Earlier this week, Chanel Fielder countered by filing a motion for temporary relief to cover attorney’s fees and the cost of the proceedings.
After a blistering start to the season during which he hit .301 and had an1.009 OPS, Fielder’s average has fallen to .262 and his OPS has not exceeded .788 in any other month. His 17 home runs and 82 RBIs are also on pace to fall well short of his 30 homers and 108 RBIs numbers of a year ago.
The website also notes that while still playing in the minor leagues in 2004, Fielder’s numbers experienced a similar drop-off when his parents were going through a similarly messy divorce.
Despite all his personal chaos, Fielder has not missed a game this season and has been instrumental in keeping the Tigers at the top of the American League’s Central Division standings.
The couple has two young sons together.
