Gennady "GGG" Golovkin is becoming one of boxing's most popular fighters thanks to his 20-fight knockout streak. He needs those knockouts since big-name fighters are finding reasons not to step in the ring with him. Because several middleweights are looking elsewhere for action, Golovkin has opened up the possibility of fighting in higher and lower weight classes.

Super middleweight Andre Ward has been mentioned, along with now-retired 168-pounder Carl Froch, but what Golovkin really wants is a matchup with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Golovkin wants it so badly, he won't even insist on a catch weight. He will actually drop to 154 pounds; Mayweather has fought his last three bouts as a welterweight, but does have titles at junior middleweight.

"Right now, this is the biggest fight in the world," Golovkin said. "He's a great champion. Look at me, I'm not big. I'm not fat. My last couple of fights I was 158, 159. It is possible for me to go down to fight him. I would go to 154 just for Floyd. I understand that this is biggest fight in the world. This would show who is who, the best fighter in the world."

Unfortunately for Golovkin, he is highly unlikely to get that big opportunity. According to TMZ.com, Mayweather has already agreed to fight former welterweight titlist Andre Berto on September 12, in a bout that may be televised on CBS rather than pay-per-view. Thus far, that choice has received little fanfare.

Berto has lost to two of Mayweather's previous opponents, Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero, neither of whom are considered some of Mayweather's top opposition. He is passing over fighters like Amir Khan, who has a better resume than Berto, and Keith Thurman, who is undefeated.

Golovkin wants to return this fall, and is now hoping for a deal with IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux.
