Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s September opponent is rumored to be Andre Berto, much to the chagrin of many fans and fighters hoping to be chosen for that lucrative opportunity. Welterweight Amir Khan is likely at the top of that list, having been mentioned alongside Mayweather since last year.

Khan was passed over in favor of Marcos Maidana in 2014, even though he has a victory over Maidana earlier in their careers at 140 pounds. Khan is now a full-fledged welterweight with three straight victories at 147 pounds, but still can't secure that big payday. Khan thinks that Berto may be a smokescreen used by Mayweather to lull him into not preparing fully for the September fight, and he says he won't fall into that trap.

"I know how Floyd works. The Pacquiao fight was only announced six weeks before it happened so I think there's a good chance between me and him can happen as well. It's all about me staying in shape," Khan said.

"I don't want Floyd to catch me off guard so I need to keep in the gym and keep busy until he announces who he's going to fight. I think the world of boxing is waiting for Floyd's decision before they can make their own moves."

Khan was not as dominant as he'd hoped when he faced Chris Algieri in a Premier Boxing Champions main event on Spike TV, but he's unbeaten as a welterweight against Devon Alexander, Luis Collazo and Algieri.

Berto is coming off two wins himself, over much lesser competition. He was also rebounding from three losses in his previous four bouts, two of those losses coming against fighters Mayweather has already beaten (Victor Ortiz, Robert Guerrero).
