Tony Romo Out For Sunday Hall Of Fame Game Against Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys Open Presason Without Quarterback

The Dallas Cowboys will open the preseason without starting quarterback Tony Romo. Sources report that Romo, 33, won't start in Sunday's Hall of Fame game against the Miami Dolphins at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, O.H.

Romo, who had offseason surgery in April to remove a cyst in his back, hasn't missed a practice during training camp, but the Cowboys are taking precautions before the team undergoes its first tune-up game. Romo was hopeful that he'd play in the game Sunday, but said he'd go along with whatever head coach Jason Garrett decided. Garrett aired on the side of caution, and decided not to start the three-time Pro Bowler.

"I don't think they're talking about some of us going to play on Sunday," Romo told the media after Friday's practice. "It's whatever Coach tells you (to do). They know what's best for our football team."

The Cowboys have five preseason games this summer, and its expected Romo will be available to play in their second contest against the Oakland Raiders on Aug. 9.

Defensive end DeMarcus Ware, coming off shoulder surgery, running back DeMarco Murray and wide receiver Dez Bryant may also sit out Sunday's preseason tune-up.

The Cowboys enter the 2013-14 campaign hoping to improve on their 8-8 third place finish of last year. Romo, who has said to have looked good in practice drills at training camp, is hoping to get Dallas to the playoffs for the first time since the 2009 season.

Dallas opens up at home against its division rival New York Giants on Sept. 8.
