The San Francisco 49ers' new quarterbacks coach has a message for Colin Kaepernick: more running equals less passing proficiency.

The Sacramento Bee reported that first-year Niners quarterbacks coach Steve Logan wants a signal caller that can beat opponents with both his arm and his legs. But an over-reliance on the legs could be a detriment to Kaepernick and the offense.

Colin Kaepernick praise for new coaching staff "cleanup" a commentary on Jim Harbaugh's staff?

"The operative word is 'discernment,'" Logan said to the publication. "You've got a trump card available to you that some quarterbacks don't. What we need to learn is when to use the trump card and when not to. If we use the trump card too much, you'll devolve as a pocket passer. If you learn to use it at the appropriate times, you can really blossom as a pocket passer."

Logan, who spent 14 years at Eastern Carolina, including the last 11 as head coach, guided a pair of Pirates quarterbacks that would go on to the NFL in Jeff Blake and David Garrard.

Should the 49ers listen to offers for Colin Kaepernick to begin reloading franchise?

Running quarterbacks oftentimes make defensive coordinators rethink their blitz schemes and consider who will shadow the QB when the defense plays man coverage, Logan added.

"And this is where we've seen Colin Kaepernick and Aaron Rodgers and all these mobile quarterbacks who can really do damage to defenses by pulling the football down when everybody's covered and go get something maybe a Peyton Manning or a more pocket-oriented quarterbacks is not capable of getting," Logan said. "And that's not a knock on anybody. It's just I really prefer to have that bonus attached to the quarterback position."

Logan said a point of emphasis this season is to attempt more downfield passes to create explosion plays. He said he would sacrifice some accuracy for big plays. If Kaepernick only completed 48 percent of his passes in a game, but had three explosion plays that created three touchdowns, Logan would be happy.

Ninersnation.com added that offensive coordinator Geep Chryst also plans to move the pocket more to keep Kaepernick from amassing the sacks - 52 - that he took last season.

"That plays to Kap's advantage," Chryst told Niners Nation. "I think he's always been good throwing to both his left and to his right. In terms of sacks, that's a byproduct of a couple different things. You always want to stay healthy in the offensive line for cohesiveness. For the first time in a couple years we weren't. And then you gotta figure out when to get the ball out. And if you feel vulnerable, a defense in the NFL will make you cry uncle. But yea, we're trying to play to Kap's strengths."

It also gives Kaepernick momentum if he decides to take off running.
