The all-star winged sprint car series that Tony Stewart bought in January currently is in Canandaigua, N.Y. for a weekend of racing events.

Syracuse.com reported that Stewart's UNOH All-Star Circuit of Champions, the series the three-time Sprint Cup champion acquired in late January is coming back to Canandiaigua.

The tour stop is significant in that it links Stewart to the site of his infamous encounter in August of 2014. It was at Canandaigua where Stewart and Kevin Ward Jr. had an altercation that led to Ward's tragic death.

Stewart and Ward were competing in a dirt-track race, when the cars got right next to each other. Reports conflicted as to whether the cars actually touched, but their encounter led to Ward veering off and hitting the outer wall of the dirt track.

A visibly angry Ward got out of his vehicle and started walking across the track to where he thought Stewart might pass again.

Ward started to gesture at Stewart as his car closed in. Ward, however got too close and got clipped by Stewart's right rear tire as he passed by. The entanglement sent Ward airborne forward some 50 feet. Ward hit the track surface, and died upon impact.

Stewart missed the next three weeks of the NASCAR season as he tried to come to grips with the tragedy, even after an investigation deemed he was not to blame for Ward's death.

Stewart used to moonlight with appearances at dirt-track races but has not appeared in one since the night of Ward's death.

In announcing his acquisition of the All-Star Circuit of Champions series, Stewart pointed to his passion for sprint-car racing as the reason he bought the circuit.

"My passion for sprint car racing is well known, and the All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series has been a pillar of the sport for a long time," Stewart said, according to EldoraSpeedway.com. "Racing is my business, and I look forward to building on the All Star Series' already impressive legacy by taking it to a new level of success and sustainability."
