The Red Sox got themselves some starting pitching insurance last night in case ace Clay Buchholz can't return from his lingering injury. That insurance comes in the form of Jake Peavy, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a three-team deal that also included the Detroit Tigers.
The Red Sox received Peavy and relief pitcher Brayan Villareal, the Tigers acquired shortstop Jose Iglesias from Boston, and the White Sox got Avasail Garcia from Detroit, as well as Boston prospects Dominican Francelis Montas, J.B. Wendelken, and Cleuluis Rondon.
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said of acquiring Peavy, "The one thing we wanted to do, if we could pull it off, when we looked at the next two months, we're in a position to compete for a playoff spot, and adding a starting pitcher was the most important thing we could do to add to that."
This season Peavy is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA, along with 76 strikeouts and 17 walks in 80 innings of work. According to ESPN, the Red Sox had also been targeting Cliff Lee of the Philadelphia Phillies, but their asking price was shortstop prospect Xander Bogaerts, Boston's top farmhand.
As for Detroit, they have secured their shortstop replacement for Jhonny Peralta, should he draw a suspension from MLB for his involvement with the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic. Iglesias is known as a defensive wizard, with former teammate David Ortiz proclaiming him the best defensive player at short he'd ever seen.
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a statement, "We are excited to be adding a quality player to our middle infield. He is a young player that will provide a lot of depth and has had success playing a variety of roles in the infield." Along with the glovework, Iglesias has batted .330 this season which will be a nice bonus for Detroit if he's called upon to play everyday.
