The Miami Heat narrowly missed the playoffs this season, but it seems likely that they would have made it if Chris Bosh had stayed healthy. Still, the team appears to have some nice building blocks in place for the future. But are they about to lose a franchise cornerstone?

Dwyane Wade has been the face of the Heat for a decade, and he is the greatest player in franchise history, but according to The Miami Herald, his time in Miami could be nearing an end.

"The Heat and Dwyane Wade have been discussing potential resolutions of his contract situation and there's a significant difference in what both parties believe he should be paid for the next three seasons, according to multiple sources," writes Heat insider Barry Jackson.

But there's more:

"Though Wade prefers to stay with the Heat, where he has spent his entire 12-year career, he is now open to considering other teams this summer if the Heat does not raise its offer, according to three sources with direct knowledge.

"Wade must decide by late June whether to opt out of a contract that would pay him $16.1 million next season."

Miami does not appear to be able to afford the salary Wade wants, and despite his injury history, plenty of teams would be interested. Headlines were made earlier this season when LeBron talked about reuniting with Wade in the future, and Wade has long been coveted by his hometown Chicago Bulls.

If Wade opts out, look for the rumor mill to kick into high gear for sure.
