Though CM Punk is preparing for his first UFC fight while Samoa Joe just recently turned up in NXT, the "Best in the World" joked about a match with his longtime friend and former in-ring foe.

Indy promotion Absolute Intense Wrestling promoter John Thorne joked on Twitter last week that he would cancel Joe's slated match against Johnny Gargano if Punk would face the former Ring of Honor and TNA star instead.

Punk had a light-hearted exchange with the promoter on Twitter after he mentioned him in the comment:

Samoa Joe Discusses Leaving TNA For NXT

Punk walked out in the WWE in January 2014 the day after the Royal Rumble and has vowed to never wrestle again while Joe recently debuted at NXT Takeover: Unstoppable last week as he interrupted the main event match between NXT Champion Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, leading to a no-contest.

After walking out, Punk later explained on Colt Cabana's podcast that he was tired of being "creatively stifled" by the WWE and was also upset with constantly being asked to work injured.

The former WWE Champion also claimed that he suffered a concussion at the Royal Rumble and that WWE's Dr. Chris Amann misdiagnosed it as well as other ailments along the way.

Amann quickly responded with a defamation lawsuit, which reportedly is what led to the departure of Punk's wife AJ Lee, who announced her retirement in April.

Punk said he would never ever return to the WWE while Vince McMahon said he was hopeful the two sides will once again work together someday down the line on "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's podcast on the WWE Network in December.

The WWE CEO also apologized for Punk receiving his termination papers from the company on his wedding day.

Punk joined the UFC in December and has been training out of Roufusport in Milwaukee for his debut, which is slated for late 2015, but the details haven't been released about it yet.

Joe, who had very memorable clashes with Punk in ROH, is still working some Indy bookings and is slated for a feud with Owens in NXT for the time being.

While a Punk vs. Joe match in WWE or elsewhere is unlikely, the light-hearted exchange was interesting to see.
