ProFootballTalk.com is reporting the loser in the Michael Vick-Nick Foles quarterback competition could be out of much more than just a starting job.
The website reports the Philadelphia Eagles may well move to cut ties with the loser altogether.
Should he be the one to come up on the short end, some have long speculated that the veteran Vick might be allowed to seek a new start elsewhere. Now, the website reports first-year coach Chip Kelly and his staff may be of the same mind as it relates to the 24-year-old Foles.
According to PFT, the plan calls for rookie Matt Barkley to serve as the backup to whomever emerges as the first stringer, with Kelly’s former Oregon signal-caller Dennis Dixon serving as the scout-team, change-of-pace read option specialist.
If the longshot possibility of Barkley winning the starting spot outright occurs, PFT said Foles more than likely would be retained as the top backup, and Vick would be shown the door.
The 33-year-old Vick started eight of 10 games he played in last season, finishing with 2,362 passing yards and 12 touchdowns. He also rushed for 331 yards and completed 58 percent of his passes.
In seven games, Foles threw for 1,699 yards last season and six scores.
