Michael Phelps isn't sure what the future holds for him, but reports indicate the retired Olympic swimmer may return to the sport at the 2016 Olympics.

Phelps, 28, was adamant after the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London that he was retiring from swimming, and though he didn't fully say he's returning, he left the door open for a possible comeback down the road.

"I don't know what's going to happen in the future," Phelps said Monday, according to The Associated Press. "I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow."

Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time, garnering 22 medals over his illustrious career. When asked if he'd partake in 2016, Phelps said he hasn't planned that far ahead yet and doesn't know what the future will hold. For right now he's not focused on 2016, but he's enjoying all the free time he now has in 2013.

"I don't know. We're in 2013," Phelps said to the Associated Press about possibly coming out of retirement in 2016, "There's nothing in the works."

Phelps, who lives in Baltimore, is currently wearing a boot cast on his foot due to an injury he suffered when he jammed his toe into his sofa at his house. He re-aggravated the injury playing in a golf tournament at Lake Tahoe recently. Even though Phelps can't physically train right now, if he decides to return he would begin gearing up for a potential comeback at the end of this year and hope to be in peak condition by 2015.

While it remains to be seen what the future will hold for the athlete, he seems to have more of an open mind and is being vague about his future after saying his career was over following the 2012 games.
