Michael Sam made history by becoming the first ever openly gay player in the National Football League. His story broke ahead of the draft, and the St. Louis Rams selected him in the seventh round. He was eventually released by the team, but caught on with the Dallas Cowboys on their practice squad.

Dallas eventually cut Sam too, and he had a poor showing at this offseason's veteran combine. However, he still managed to land another pro football gig, according to TMZ. On Friday, Sam signed a two-year deal to become a member of the Montreal Alouettes, one of the better-known teams in the Canadian Football League.

After the signing, Alouettes GM Jim Popp said, "With the signing of Michael Sam, we have become a better organization today. Not only have we added an outstanding football player, we have added even a better person that brings dignity, character, and heart to our team."

Sam is also excited about the opportunity, and he undoubtedly hopes that it will pave the way for him to make a return to the NFL someday.

"I cannot wait to put on the pads, get back on the field and work hard each and every day with my teammates to bring a Grey Cup to the great fans here in Montreal," said Sam.

Sam has been open about the fact that he thinks that his sexual orientation prevented him from being given a real chance to succeed in the NFL. Whether or not that was the case, he should get another chance if he plays well in Canada, as a number of NFL players have jumped into the league after starting in the CFL over the years.
