The WWE pulled the trigger on the split of Rusev and Lana on Monday Night RAW after building toward the breakup for quite some time.

Lana quit for the Bulgarian Brute during his I Quit Match with John Cena for the United States Championship at Payback on Sunday at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore in what was the final straw for their relationship.

Rusev flipped out on the Ravishing Russian on RAW this week and she ended up siding with Dolph Ziggler, kissing The Showoff twice, much to the chagrin of the mighty Russian Rusev.

Lana then took to Twitter after the results unfolded to talk about her apparent face turn and new found freedom from Rusev:

It would appear that this has sparked an instantaneous feud between Rusev and Ziggler that is sure to play out over the next few months on WWE television.

The WWE started forming the cracks in the foundation between Lana and Rusev when she was bumped at WrestleMania 31 in March and it distracted Rusev long enough for Cena to pin him and win the United States Championship for the first time in 11 years.

Things escalated at Extreme Rules when Rusev lost to Cena in a Russian Chain Match and the Bulgarian Brute went nuts on his valet until she spoke to The Authority and was granted a rematch at Payback.

Rusev was locked in the STF by Cena, who was using the dislodged top rope to enforce the move, and was screaming in Russian when Lana grabbed the microphone and quit for him. Lana then said on RAW that Rusev was quitting in Russian, which led to Rusev dismissing her.

It will be interesting to see how the WWE handles this duo going forward now that Lana and Rusev have parted ways.
