Aaron Hernandez could face the death penalty if federal officials get involved in the ongoing murder investigations he now finds himself at the center of.
In addition to already being charged with first-degree murder in the Odin Lloyd execution styled slaying, Hernandez, 23, is now close to being indicted in a 2012 double murder of Safiro Furtado and Daniel Abreu in nearby Suffolk County.
“If this was a murder of a witness or someone who knew something about the earlier murder, then this case becomes potentially a death penalty case and a federal proceeding,” attorney Jack Furlong told reporters of the potential motive for the Lloyd killing.
”Remember, Massachusetts does not have the death penalty,” he added. “The United States government does. This case went across state lines repeatedly between Florida, Connecticut and Massachusetts. It could go federal in a heartbeat.”
Six-years ago , prosecutors in the Michael Vick dogfighting trial decided to take the case federal after they concluded state prosecutors in Surry County, Virginia were not pursuing charges zealously enough.
Already jailed without bail and cut by the New England Patriots, Hernandez could soon find himself in the same predicament.
