Ever since free agency started, the biggest story regarding the Dallas Cowboys has not been their running back situation. Instead, it has been the contract status of Dez Bryant, who is arguably the best player on the team and one of the best wide receivers in the entire NFL. The team placed the franchise tag on Bryant, but not much has happened since.

Race Driving Chip Kelly's Roster Decisions?

The two sides have been working on a deal for months now, and progress has been slow. It is believed that the amount of guaranteed money in the deal has been a major sticking point for Bryant, but now there could also be another issue, according to CBS Sports.

The Cowboys are always looking for ways to gain an edge on their opponents, and they are reportedly considering having Bryant return punts in the upcoming season. He used to return punts for the team, but he has not done so since 2012.

"We may have to do it by committee," Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones said Wednesday. "We think Cole Beasley is what we call a safe catcher of punts. He can do that, he's done it for us. He'll probably be first in line. Then we have a guy in Dez Bryant who had quite a career returning punts at Oklahoma State. When we need a big play, with him maturing as a player, it would't be out of the question to see him in some key situations when we need him back there."

While Bryant would undoubtedly be a dangerous return man, the risk seems to greatly outweight the reward for the team, as the last thing they need is to have one of the most dangerous wideouts in the league get hurt trying to pick up an extra few yards per punt return.

Bryant's feelings on the matter have not been made public, but he cannot be happy about the idea, particularly if he has to play out 2015 under the franchise tag and try to negotiate his megacontract next season.
