The New England Patriots are not expected to cut cornerback Alfonzo Dennard after he was jailed earlier this month on driving under the influence charges.
Only days after they moved to completely sever all ties with former star tight end Aaron Hernandez after he was charged with first-degree murder, The Boston Globe reports the Pats will hold on to Dennard even though the second-year quarterback has a history of recent run-ins with the law.
Just prior to the 2012 NFL Draft, Dennard was arrested for assault on a police officer. Some NFL talent evaluators speculate that development factored in him falling all the way to the seventh round of the draft, as several teams were scared off from selecting him in one of the higher rounds. Dennard was sentenced to 30 days in connection with that arrest, which he’s set to serve next March.
Given his most recent arrest, he now also faces a probation hearing on July 31 to determine if he violated the terms of it based on his DUI charge. The date of the hearing falls during training camp and could complicate Dennard’s availability.
No matter how the Patriots might decide to discipline him, Dennard also could faces the prospect of disciplinary action being taken against him on the part of the NFL. The Globe also reports the Patriots are prepared for that eventuality and the outcome of legal proceedings could still change their stance on retaining him.
