Atlanta police are investigating the burglary of home run legend Hank Aaron’s southwest Georgia home, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Aaron, 79, and his wife were away when robbers forced their way into their home sometime last weekend, stealing jewelry and the couple’s two BMWs. Police said Aaron missed a call from his alarm company on Sunday and a day later asked a neighbor to check on the property, which is when the theft was detected.
“On the side of the residence, the electrical panels were on the ground and the wires were cut inside the box,” according to a police report obtained by the Journal-Constitution. “The generator was on due to the electrical wires being cut. The wires were cut from a panel located in the rear of the residence as well.”
An alarm panel near the home’s garage had also been pulled from the wall and its wires were cut, investigators added. The alarm panel in the master bedroom was also damaged, and three closets had been ransacked.
Shortly before noon on Monday, authorities recovered a silver BMW belonging to Aaron a short distance from his home on Landrum Drive, police said. Investigators were able to lift fingerprints from the car. Police added on Friday that the second vehicle has now also been recovered, but no arrests have been made.
“We are following significant leads and anticipate an arrest,” Sgt. Greg Lyon told the Journal-Constitution.
As an Atlanta Brave, Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s record of 714 career home runs on April 8, 1974. He hit his 755th and final home run on July 20, 1976, a home run record that stood for almost three decades.
