The All-Star break has ended and the New York Yankees (51-44) head from the feel-good vibes of Citi Field straight into the nastiest rivalry in baseball and possibly all of sports when they head to Boston to face the American League East-leading Red Sox (58-39). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m and can be live streamed here.; Yankees fans can listen in on WCBS 880 AM while Red Sox fans can tune in to WEEI 93.7.
The Yankees will turn to their old faithful, left-hander Andy Pettitte (7-6, 4.39 ERA) to kick off New York's trek to reclaim the division. The Yankees are doing well for a team racked by injuries to star players like Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson, as well as role players like Francisco Cervelli, Eduardo Nunez, Kevin Youkilis and Jayson Nix.
While their backups have done well, the offense has sputtered many times and the Bronx Bombers find themselves six games out of first place with 10 weeks to go. Their luck could be changing, however. Although Jeter is back on the disabled list they could get Rodriguez back as early as Monday, and Robinson Cano appears to have avoided serious injury after NL starter Matt Harvey plunked him in the knee in the All-Star Game.
They said just put ice on it, the X-ray was negative, and get some rest," Cano said. Manager Joe Girardi said the key to catching Boston, aside from winning games against them, is hitting. "We've got to be more consistent offensively. And if we do that, we're going to have a shot. But that's probably what we need to do, more than anything."
The Red Sox will counter Pettitte with Felix Dubront (6-3, 3.91 ERA), who has surprised the Sox by dropping his ERA by nearly a full run in 2013. He is 2-1, with a 2.32 ERA against the Yankees, and Cano is just 1-for-14 against him.
