Wednesday’s Orioles-White Sox game played as scheduled this afternoon, with just one minor abnormality: it was in front of an empty stadium.

Due to the social unrest and racial tension plaguing Baltimore this week in the wake of Freddie Gray’s death at the hands of the police, the Orioles and Major League Baseball made the decision to barr fans from the game in the name of safety and order.

The photos and video from the scene of the game are eerie and mesmerizing.

Orioles centerfielder Adam Jones spoke for all of Baltimore when speaking to USA Today on Wednesday.

“The last 72 hours in this city have been tumultuous to say the least,” Jones said. We’ve seen good. We’ve seen bad. We’ve seen ugly. Our games canceled, postponed, relocated, a lot of families relocated. A city that is hurting. A city that needs its head of the city to step up and help the ones who are hurting. It’s not an easy time for anybody.

“The youth are hurting. This is their cry. Obviously, this isn’t a cry that’s acceptable but it’s their cry and therefore we have to understand it and accept it. They need hugs. They need love. They need support. I’m going to try to give as much as I can because the city needs it.”
