Predictions
The smart money is on American Pharoah, but all signs point to a Dortmund victory. Jockeyed by Martin Garcia, Dortmund is a winner in all six of his races. Even better, being the son of 2008 Derby winner Big Brown and standing at a statuesque 17.2 hands tall, winning is in his DNA.
Hall of famer Bob Baffert—also responsible for American Pharoah's meteoric rise—believes Dortmund has an added edge.
"Dortmund is really long and really light on his feet," Baffert said (via Newsday). "He's probably more battle-tested. He's been in a couple fights. American Pharoah, he's a different type of horse. He's fast, but he cruises effortlessly."
"He hasn't been in a dogfight, so we don't know how he's going to respond."
Come Saturday, that will no longer be the case, but it won't be enough to overcome Dortmund's experience.
