Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban insists his team is better off for having missed out on free agent center Dwight Howard.
Dallas was one of five teams to meet with Howard in Los Angeles before the All-Star center announced he would be signing with the Houston Rockets. Since making his decision, the Mavs have signed guards Jose Calderon and Monta Ellis, forward Wayne Wllington and center Sam Dalembert. The team is also reported to be close to inking deals with Devin Harris and Brandan Wright.
"I think we've put ourselves in a spot where we're in a better spot than we were at if we got just the one max-out deal," Cuban told ESPN."I think it'd be better shorter and longer term. I don't want to make that sound the wrong way. I think we'll be better this year because we added five good players or more."
Cuban’s newfound sentiments are similar to those he expressed last summer when point guard Deron Williams decided to re-sign with the Brooklyn Nets. The Mavs wound up finishing the year at 41-41, missing the playoffs for the first time in 12 years.
"Obviously we didn't get Dwight," Cuban said. "We took a chance, and it didn't happen. I think we put together a really good team. It sticks within the culture we've tried to define. We've dealt with some of the weaknesses we had from last year. Hopefully if we stay healthy, good things will happen."
The Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks were also among the teams that met with Howard.
