Steve Spurrier, All SEC Coaches Insist NCAA Players Should Be Paid

South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier thinks collegiate football and basketball players should be paid at least $300 a game to compete in NCAA sanctioned sporting events.

Spurrier told a spring media day throng of reporters all 28 SEC coaches are in favor of paying players about $300 a game in football and perhaps a little less in hoops. Spurrier, who according to Yahoo! Sports, has made the pitch before, also said each of the coaches indicated they were willing to pony up the $280,000 or so he estimated it would cost for the first season when each player would roughly get $3,600.

''This is tiny compared to the money that's coming in now,'' he said. ''I think we all know that. I'm going to keep fighting for our guys.”

According to Yahoo!, Spurrier and his supporters have already taken their idea to BCS executive director Bill Hancock, telling him they are convinced the ''little bit'' would give players some pocket money and help their parents attend games. He added Hancock has since informed them he is taking up the matter with commissioners of all BCS conferences and Notre Dame.   

Finally, Spurrier noted all of the SEC coaches and athletic directors are also of the mind that Notre Dame should join a conference--- namely the ACC.

''We just started trying to figure out why the athletic director of Notre Dame is equal to all the conference commissioners,'' Spurrier said. ''Nobody had a good answer except that's the way it's always been done. All 14 of our head coaches thought that Notre Dame should join the ACC and play football like the rest of us.”
