The Washington Redskins have made a big deal about their quarterback situation for much of the last 18 months. The team has gone back and forth over whether or not Robert Griffin III will every live up to the promise that he showed during his rookie season, and they have explored other options in the meantime.
Tony Romo Guarantees Super Bowl Win For Dallas?
The team's fans cried out for Kirk Cousins when RG3 looked like he was not fully healthy, but Cousins proved to be just as bad or worse on the field. Colt McCoy showed flashes when he got his chance, but his NFL body of work makes you wonder if his successful stint with Washington was the product of small sample size.
The team has spoken this offseason about possibly drafting Marcus Mariota with the fifth pick if he is available, although that looks less and less likely as the draft nears. Instead, it looks like the team is going to give RG3 one more shot to prove that he is a franchise guy, and they picked up his fifth-year option on his contract today.

The decision was made by The Redskins awhile back but decided to announce today. #Redskins — Dianna Marie Russini (@NBCdianna) April 27, 2015
Basically, the move means that if Griffin plays well in 2015, he will already be under contract for 2016, giving the team ample time to work an extension out. If he plays poorly, they will be able to cut him before the 2016 season and move in a different direction without damaging the future of the franchise.
So while it plays out similarly to a franchise tag from Washington's standpoint, it more likely represents a last chance for Griffin. If he does not return to form this season, then it will certainly be his last in Washington, and they will be considerably more active in their search for a quarterback ahead of next year's draft.
