Regis Philbin is returning to television to host Crowd Goes Wild, a brand new show for a brand new channel, Fox Sports 1.
According to reports, Crowd Goes Wild will be similar to his previous morning show, Live With Regis and Kelly. Philbin will do some opening commentary, then interview a guest and hold debates on the hottest sports topics of the day. If this sounds like ESPN shows such as First Take with Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith, or variations of SportsNation, executive producer Michael Davies assures this show will be different.
Davies said the conversations would be nuanced, and more entertaining. "We're not a sports news show; we're a sports entertainment show. The standard for us: We're not trying to set the agenda of what America are talking about on a daily basis. We're frankly trying to be funny a lot of the time."
Philbin is an avid sports fan, and admitted that he often wanted to chat about sports when he co-hosted morning shows with Kathie Lee Griffin and Kelly Ripa.
"I could talk about what I'd seen last night at Yankee Stadium or something like that, and Kathie Lee's eyes would start to get scared," Philbin said. "Talk about something else, a football game that was so hot this Sunday, and Kelly would just not care at all. And (executive producer Michael) Gelman would say, 'What are you talking about?'"
Davies also said he's not concerned about Regis' age-he will turn 82 shortly after Crowd Goes Wild premiers. In fact, the show will feature lots of social media, according to Davies, so Philbin's age will likely become a running gag.
"Every single one of us has a parent or a grandparent who struggles with social media," Davies said. "We're going to frankly have a lot of fun with Regis' struggles with social media."
