Kobe Bryant Injury Update: Lakers' Black Mamba Tells Chris Douglas-Roberts Achilles Rehab Three Months Ahead Of Schedule, Season Opener Possible

Kobe Bryant is well ahead of schedule in his rehab from a torn Achilles, according to reports, and believes he may be able to suit up for the Los Angeles Lakers by opening night.

According to SBNation, Bryant told Chris Douglas-Roberts he is at least three months ahead of schedule and is expecting to begin running in about three weeks. Douglas-Roberts is playing for the Lakers summer league team in Las Vegas.

"He told me he's three months ahead of schedule, which is very Kobe-like," Douglas-Roberts told SBNation. Douglas-Roberts added he would be shocked if the 18-year veteran All-Star is not in the lineup by the team’s season opener.

Bryant is already on record as saying not only does he plan on being back as soon as possible, but beyond that expects to compete at a “high level” for at least three more seasons.

Since free agent center Dwight Howard announced earlier this month he was leaving L.A. for Houston, the Lakers have quietly gone about the business of recreating themselves in a different image.

Besides picking up the team option on sharpshooting guard Jodie Meeks, the team has also signed athletic wing players Nick Young and Wesley Johnson. All are thought to be more conducive to coach Mike D’Antoni’s up-tempo style of play.

The Lakers have also inked journeyman center Chris Kaman to a one year deal. The team has yet to formally set a timetable for Bryant’s return.
