Electrocuted by iPhone: Chinese Woman Electrocuted While Answering iPhone?

Apple is investigating claims that a 23-year-old Chinese woman was electrocuted while answering her iPhone.

According to The Washington Post, the Public Safety Bureau in Xinjiang has identified the victim as Ma Ailun, a former flight attendant. Investigators added she was struck after attempting to answer a call while her phone was still plugged into the wall and charging. Family members added she was in the tub when she received the call and got out to answer the phone.

The newspaper said an initial inspection of the woman’s body showed "an obvious electronic injury" on her neck.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family," Apple said in a statement. "We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter.”

A woman claiming to be Ailun’s sister later posted on the Chinese social network Sina Weibo “I hope that Apple Inc. can give us an explanation. I also hope that all you will refrain from using your mobile devices while charging.”

The Post added the phone was purchased in December, but it was not clear if it was the most recent iPhone 5 or a previous model.

While still investigating, authorities note Apple imposters are rampant throughout the area. The country has also seen a recent influx of chargers that are not approved by the country’s consumer safety agency.

According to a May report in Xinhua, authorities noted the area has also seen a recent influx of phone chargers that are not certified by the country’s consumer safety agency. The report warned that such adapters could cause fire, burns and, potentially, electrocution.
