Anna Benson, the estranged wife of former major league pitcher Kris Benson who was recently charged with storming his home while carrying a gun earlier this month, was previously charged with murder in connection with the death of an 18-year-old man in Knoxville, Tennessee.
In 1996, the body of Michael Evans was found sprawled across the bedroom floor of his small apartment with two gunshot wounds to the head, according to the New York Daily News.
Anna Benson, then known as Anna Warren, and boyfriend Paul Dejongh were both initially charged with murder, but charges against Warren were eventually dropped---as was a charge of accessory--- due to lack of evidence. Later that same year, she met Kris Benson.
According to The News, Evans was killed following an argument with the couple during which Warren told her boyfriend “get rid of him.” Police said part of the reason charges never stuck against her was because of the ambiguity raised over what she meant by the phrase.
Warren and Dejongh fled, prompting a police manhunt and the two later being featured on America’s Most Wanted. Warren was captured two years later in June 1998, but never gave a statement to police.
According to The News, Dejongh was captured two months later and eventually convicted of first-degree murder. That conviction was later reversed on appeal and he pleaded to second-degree murder, drawing a 21-year sentence. Dejongh later died in prison.
Anna Benson was arrested last week after Kris Benson called police and they arrived to find her armed with a revolver, a hatchet, an expandable baton and a Taser. According to TMZ, she also had a knife stuffed in her waistband and was wearing a bulletproof vest and ammo belt.
Kris Benson, who told police his estranged wife was demanding $30,000 from him, has since filed an emergency motion seeking full legal custody of the couple’s children.
Anna Benson previously starred on the reality TV show Baseball Wives. She is also known for once boasting that “she would sleep with all her husband’s teammates if he ever cheated on her.”
