The Dallas Cowboys surprised everyone last year during the draft when Johnny Manziel unexpectedly fell to them when they were picking at 16th overall, and Jerry Jones passed on the Texas A&M quarterback and took an offensive lineman instead.

Once the season started, nobody questioned the decision, as Dallas rode their dominant offensive line to an NFC East crown and just their second playoff victory in 18 years. This year, Dallas may have another draft day surprise in store, according to ESPN.

Jerry Jones has spoken before about knowing that Tony Romo will not play forever, and Romo himself has mentioned that he only has a handful of years left in the NFL. Now it appears that Jones could already start looking to the future, as he is reportedly considering the idea of drafting a quarterback this season.

Adrian Peterson's Suspension A Blessing In Disguise?

Dallas has held private workouts for a number of quarterback prospects, including Brett Hundley, Sean Mannion, and Garrett Grayson.

Earlier in the offseason, the team had shown some interest in veteran backups also. Obviously a veteran backup is not the quarterback of the future, but it could mean that even if the Cowboys draft a quarterback, they are just filling a roster hole instead of drafting Romo's eventual replacement.

The team is known to be a fan of the idea of sitting quarterbacks for a few seasons before throwing them into the starting role. That was the strategy they employed with Tony Romo, and given how well he has played for much of his career, it is no wonder that Dallas feels like that could be a viable strategy going forward.
