Victor Cruz doesn't have a whole lot of reasons to hate these days, but the emotion over verdict the George Zimmerman trial brought out the anger in him.
Yardbarker.com reposted the newly re-signed New York Giants wide receiver (a six-year deal worth $45.879 million, according to NFL.com) shortly after Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree manslaughter in the death of Trayvon Martin.
Cruz tweeted Saturday night, ""Thoroughly confused. Zimmerman doesn't last a year before the hood catches up to him."
According to Yardbarker.com, Cruz quickly deleted the tweet, but by the time he had done so. But the repost showed that Cruz already had five retweets of it - as well as 90 favorites - ensuring its spot in hyperspace.
USA Today also reported on reaction Twitter from a number of athletes.
Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade: "How do I explain this to my young boys????"
Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson: "Living in a world where you fight dogs; you could lose everything (Mike Vick).. If you kill a black man you're not guilty! #INjusticeSystem"
Retired New Orleans Saints linebacker Scott Fujita: "Who really failed here? The prosecution? The jury? No. The laws in the state of FL failed. Be constructive in response. Focus on change."
Former Baltimore Ravens and current free agent NFL linebacker Brendon Ayenbadejo: "I guess murder is OK."
And former NBA player Derrick Coleman (that Deadspin.com reported): "I guess they're paying us back for O.J."
There were some messages that tried to be more thought-provoking (posted on USA Today).
From current New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma: "I get if you're mad about the verdict. I don't get going out and looting/rioting 5min from where you live. Be constructive not destructive"
And from Washington Redskins wide receiver Donte Stallworth, who served a 30-day prison sentence after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter charges in 2009: "Instead of rage & anger, let's direct that emotion towards a positive movement. Like education, poverty & black on black crime in the hood."
