Rookie Dallas Mavericks guard Shane Larkin is expected to miss as much as three months of action after breaking his ankle in a summer-league practice.
According to Yahoo Sports! Larkin suffered the injury while working out with other players slated to play on the team’s summer-league squad in Las Vegas later this month.
“Yes, it’s true,” Larkin wrote on his Twitter page. “But if you think I won’t come back stronger than before then you got the wrong guy.”
The Mavs acquired the 20-year-old former Miami star with the 18th overall pick in last month’s NBA draft as part of a three team trade involving the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks.
Larkin, the son of Major League Baseball Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin, left Miami after just two seasons. As a sophomore, he averaged 14.5 points, 4.6 assists and 3.8 rebounds while helping lead the Hurricanes to the ACC championship and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
Given his combination of speed and shooting ability, Mavs Coach Rick Carlisle recently compared him to former Dallas fan favorite and key reserve J.J. Barea. Carlisle also mentioned he hoped to get Larkin acclimated to the Mavs system by having him compete in summer league.
