It's an end of an era at Borussia Dortmund and one that can benefit other European clubs, chief among them Manchester United.
Liverpool pursue Radamel Falcao
After seven years, two Bundesliga titles, one German Cup and a runners-up medal in the Champions League, Jurgen Klopp has decided to step down as manager of Borussia Dortmund at the end of this season.
"We reached the decision together," Klopp said in a press conference on Tuesday (via the Guardian). "You can't imagine how difficult it is when you have something so wonderful as here."
3 Reasons Jurgen Klopp Should Avoid Coaching Manchester City
"We were able to create a wonderful piece of history," he added. "It's very unusual for a story to last seven years in football. I will miss every single person here and that feeling will only grow with time."
With Klopp's departure, all of Europe sees this as the one opportunity to poach talent previously tied down to his coaching.
Mats Hummels has been targeted by Manchester United since the birth of the center-back. The World Cup champion fits the mold of the ball-playing defender lacking in Louis Van Gaal's system. Hummels previously stated his desire to remain in Germany, but a change in Klopp's plans has resulted in a change in his tone.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the 26-year-old said he's "reflecting on a move away from Dortmund, adding: "Playing for a club outside [of] Germany will be good for my professional and personal well-being."
Couple that quote with a £29 million price tag, and all the makings are there for United to benefit from a Borussia Dortmund fire sale.
