Another New England Patriot is in trouble with the law, as defensive back Alfonzo Dennard was pulled over for suspicion of driving under the influence at 2:00 a.m. early Thursday morning, according to reports.
Dennard was cited for suspicion of DUI, refusing a chemical test, and a driving infraction, according to the Omaha-World Herald. This is not the first time Dennard has been in trouble with the law; he was given two years probation in for assaulting a police officer in April of 2012. In addition to probation, Dennard will serve a 30-day jail sentence beginning March 1st, 2014.
The assault happened before he was drafted by New England, and caused his draft stock to tumble. Ex-Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was another New England draft choice whose stock fell in the draft because of character concerns. Hernandez has been released and is in jail awaiting trial in the murder of a 27-year-old semipro football player Odin Lloyd.
It is unclear at the moment how the arrest will affect Dennard's probation, or his status with the Patriots organization. New England quickly released Hernandez upon his arrest, so Dennard may be on the chopping block thanks to the latest Pats public relations black eye.
As a rookie last year Dennard played 10 games and recorded three interceptions, taking one of them to the house for an 87-yard touchdown. He also notched seven pass defenses and forced a fumble, becoming New England's top cornerback for a time before the front office acquired Aqib Talib, yet another player with a checkered past.
Less than a week ago Patriots owner Robert Kraft said that if the charges against Hernandez prove true, the team had been "duped." The same could then be said for Dennard, who pledged to change his wayward behavior after receiving his sentence.
