Carmelo Anthony To The Lakers? L.A. Could Be Targeting NBA Scoring Champion In 2014

With Dwight Howard now off their books and salary cap space in their budget, the Los Angeles Lakers are targeting Carmelo Anthony in free-agency in 2014, according to the L.A. Times.

The high-scoring New York Knicks forward has an opt-out clause in his contract after next season and his close relationship with L.A. star guard Kobe Bryant could bode well for any such planned alliance.

In addition, over the years Bryant has said that Anthony is the one player with whom he would love to be teammates. According to the New York Post, the Knicks can offer Anthony an extension starting in February, but his reaction to it figures to largely be based on how well the aging Knicks are able to compete this season. The newspaper reported on May 29 that Anthony had voiced his hopes the team would be able to add a secondary scorer this season.

Reportedly Anthony told friends after Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce were shipped from Boston to Brooklyn, he figured the Knicks would make a play for point guard for Rajon Rondo. Instead, the Knicks have re-signed free agents J.R. Smith and Pablo Priginoi and traded for up-and-down shooting forward Andrea Bargnani.

On top of all that, Anthony’s wife, La La Vasquez, is a budding actress already with many connections in L.A. The couple already has a home in L.A. and Vasquez resides there at least part of the year.
