Kurt Warner has said that Colin Kaepernick has to learn to think like a quarterback first and an athlete second to succeed in the NFL.

Kaepernick's San Francisco 49ers teammate Anquan Boldin, however, is not sold on that idea.

Kurt Warner says Colin Kaepernick has to think like a quarterback first, athlete second, to succeed

The Sacramento Bee reported on Boldin's appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, where he contradicted the advice that the two-time NFL MVP had for Kaepernick.

"I just think he has to just block out everything else around him," Boldin said during the radio interview. "Stop listening to what people have to say about you, stop listening to what people want to see you do and just be yourself. I think sometimes when you try to go off of suggestions of other people and try to please other people, you forget who you are and what got you there."

What bothers Boldin is that three years ago, Kaepernick was good enough to lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl and nearly good enough to win the game.

So Boldin thinks that Kaepernick needs to trust his own instincts.

"Trust your skills, trust the athletic ability that you have and just go for it," he said.

Boldin's assessment sounds good in theory, but Kaepernick efficiency has diminished in each successive year he has started. Last season, he throw for a career-high 3,369 yards but had his lowest quarterback rating of his three years as a starter.

Kaepernick spent the past offseason training at EXOS Performance training facility in Phoenix training with Warner and quarterbacks coach Dennis Gile.

The 49ers quarterback worked on staying in the pocket longer, putting more touch on his shorter passes.

"He can't do all the running," Warner said during his interview with Sirius' Rich Gannon. "Now he's got to become more of a pass-first guy and complement with his athleticism. And he's never been asked to do that before. And so that's the process that we kind of went through in the couple of months I was working with him."
