The Los Angeles Lakers are just days away from closing out the worst season in the history of the franchise, and the players and fans probably cannot wait for it to be over. The team has already set a franchise record for losses in a season, and it is unfortunately in the team's best interest to keep losing games, as they will lose their first-round draft pick if it falls outside of the top five (they currently have the fourth-worst record in the league).

But with the Lakers, hope is always on the horizon, and this stretch appears to be no different, as Kobe Bryant and Julius Randle will both return from injury next season, and the team appears to have a great shot at landing its most coveted free agent target, Rajon Rondo.

According to the Latin Post, Rondo is now believed to definitely be on his way out of Dallas once the season ends, and he does plan on signing with Los Angeles. However, the interesting part of the story comes with the Lakers' current point guard, Jeremy Lin.

Lin obviously stands to lose if Rondo joins the team (which is considered a "mortal lock"), so he will probably not be wearing purple and gold next year. In fact, it appears that he may in fact fill the void Rondo leaves behind in Dallas.

The Mavericks have already indicated that they will have interest in Lin this summer once he becomes a free agent, and if he likes what the team has to offer, there is little reason for him to turn them down.

It looks like the Lakers and Mavericks are poised to make a de-facto trade, although it would be via the free agent market.
