Music star Lauryn Hill has checked into a federal prison in Connecticut to begin serving a three-month sentence on tax evasion charges.
According to TMZ, Hill, who before embarking on a solo career was a member of the Fugees, will be held in general population in the “barracks type” minimum security facility.
Hill, 38, checked into the Federal Correctional Institution just before noon. She pled guilty to three counts of tax evasion late last year for failing to file returns on $1.8 million earned in the years 2005 and 2007.
In 1998, Hill recorded the masterful Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, a critically-acclaimed R&B album many consider to be among the best ever made. It debuted No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with sells of more than 12 million copies.
Among its biggest hits were “Doo Wop (that Thing),” “Ex-Factor” and “Everything is Everything.” She won five Grammys that year, including Album of the Year.
Hill was raised in South Orange, N.J. and enjoyed success at an early age, appearing in such TV and film productions As The World Turns and Sister Act 2: Back In Habit.
Along with band members Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, The Fugees released two albums, including the Grammy-award winning The Score, which sold more than 17 million.
