Today at 4:10 p.m. ET, the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers kickoff their campaigns with Opening Day action live from Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles.

San Diego showcases one of its many new additons in James Shields, who takes the mound for Game 1. Shields went 14-8 with the American League champion Kansas City Royals last season and added a 3.21 ERA and 180 strikeouts in 34 games.

Los Angeles counters with reigning NL Cy Young and Most Valuable Player Award winner Clayton Kershaw, who went an astounding 21-3 in 2014 with a 1.77 ERA and 239 strikeouts through 27 games.

The Padres made a lot of big moves to improve their lineup, with their outfield going through a complete facelift. San Diego added Wil Myers, Matt Kemp and Justin Upton in the offseason and made another deal with the Braves Sunday night, brining in closer Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton.

San Diego parted ways with outfielder Cameron Maybin and Carlos Quentin in the latest deal with Atlanta.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, are a favorite to win the NL West for the third straight year thanks in large part to their pitching staff, which includes Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu, who starts the season on the disabled list.

Los Angeles finished 94-68 last season before falling to the St. Louis Cardinals in four games in the NLDS.

San Diego, meanwhile, went 77-85 and finished in third place in the NL West, marking the eighth straight season the team missed the postseason.

Two NL West rivals take the field for Opening Day when the Dodgers host the Padres live from Dodger Stadium this afternoon in Los Angeles.
