Today at 1:00 p.m. ET the Detroit Tigers, the defending champions of the American League Central division, will begin 2015 with a new ace on the hill, left-hander David Price. They'll start their season vs. the Minnesota Twins and Phil Hughes. Live stream their opening series by clicking this link. Tigers fans can listen to the game on 97.1 The Ticket, while Twins fans may do the same on 96.3 K-Twin.
Price was arguably the biggest addition of the 2014 trade deadline, going 4-4 with a 3.59 ERA in 11 starts for the Tigers. He has assumed the mantle of Tigers ace from Justin Verlander, and for good reason. As a Tiger in those 11 starts Price was a control freak, striking out 82 hitters and walking just 15.
"I'm extremely honored to take the ball on that day, because it's a very special day in baseball," Price said. "It caught me by surprise, to say the least. I definitely thought it'd be Ver out there. I'm really excited for it."
Hughes was another strike machine in 2014. He put together the best season of his career, going 16-10 with a 3.52 ERA and an absurd 11.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He is the frontline hurler for the Twins now, eight years after debuting for the New York Yankees, who expected this success to come in pinstripes.
While Detroit is expected to compete for the division crown again, and the Twins to languish in the cellar, new Twins manager Paul Molitor isn't talking like someone interested in taking a back seat. "I'm coming here to win," Molitor said. "I think it's very important to lay that out there right from the start. Things can change very dramatically at this level, very quickly."
