Boston has won three consecutive contests entering tonight while Detroit has dropped two straight games and closes out a two-match home stand.
The Red Wings have just five games remaining after this and are currently in the third and final automatic playoff spot in the Atlantic Division.
The Bruins, meanwhile, are just two points behind their opponent with four games left after tonight and own the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The team is three points behind the Washington Capitals (94) and three ahead of the Ottawa Senators (88).
Boston leads the season series 3-1 heading into tonight and topped Detroit 5-3 in the last head-to-head meeting on March 8.

The Bruins enter play after defeating the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Tuesday and will look to win their fourth straight game.
Patrice Bergeron has paced Boston with 53 points this season by finding the back of the net 21 times and adding 32 assists while Loui Eriksson (20 tallies, 24 helpers) and Milan Lucic (18 goals, 26 assists) are tied for second on the Bruins with 44 points.
The Red Wings come into the game on the heels of a 2-1 shootout loss to the Senators on Tuesday and will try to avoid their third consecutive defeat.
Henrik Zetterberg leads Detroit with 61 points off of 16 goals and 45 assists while Tomas Tatar is first on the Red Wings with 28 markers and has added 26 helpers for 54 points on the campaign.
In between the pipes, Detroit is likely to turn to Petr Mrazek and he is 15-7-2 with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage this season.
Boston is likely to counter with Tuukka Rask in the crease and he is 32-19-12 with a 2.30 GAA and a .922 save percentage.
