The Dallas Cowboys had a stellar season last year, and they just missed appearing in the NFC Championship Game. In 2015, they will look to build on that success, but they have also exercised some uncharacteristic restraint so far in free agency, which shows that the team may have learned from some past mistakes.

The restrained free agency also means that, while they undoubtedly want to win this year, the team is also keeping one eye on the future. Owner Jerry Jones confirmed as much with some recent comments of his. According to Fox Sports, Jones is already thinking about finding a replacement for Tony Romo.

"We do have to look to the future relative to quarterback," Jones said. "It's starting a timeframe where a guy could come in and be a good backup."

The team is obviously not looking to replace Romo this season. The quarterback is coming off of one of his best statistical seasons, and there are no indications that he will not continue playing at a high level.

However, Romo is in his mid-thirties, and he and the team realize that he will not play forever. Jones will likely hope to duplicate the model he had with Romo, who sat on the bench for a few seasons (much like Aaron Rodgers) before coming in and thriving in the starting role.

"Look at how Romo evolved into the guy he is today," Jones said. "He did a little time with the clipboard."
