Unable to get minutes with Real Madrid, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez rejoined the Mexican national team with the hopes of returning to the one place he's paid to be: The stat sheet.
Javier Hernandez Must 'Keep Fighting' for Place at Real Madrid
It's been 134 days since Hernandez last scored a goal. A stunning individual effort before a capacity crowd in Amsterdam capped what was a disappointing 2014 campaign. Three months into the new year, the 26-year-old hasn't fared any better.
That, however, isn't enough to deter him. Hernandez remains confident ahead of Mexico's clash with Ecuador.
Cristiano Ronaldo Would Cost £25 Million More Than Gareth Bale
"I'm very motivated, with a lot of enthusiasm," he said in Los Angeles on Wednesday (via ESPN FC). "This is what I'm waiting for: The opportunities to be able to do what I love most in life. It's been a year with a lot of experiences and unfortunately in the last few years, what I've lacked is opportunities, nothing more."
In fairness to Carlo Ancelotti, Hernandez has done little to earn opportunities at the Santiago Bernabeu. Before his individual efforts against Holland, his last goal came against lowly Cornella in the Copa del Rey. A disappointing performance against Ludogorets in the Champions League proved to be the last straw for the Real Madrid boss.
He's failed to start in a match since.
Now with Miguel Herrera, Hernandez will look to both end his scoring drought and prove his worth on the pitch. It is of the utmost importance if he hopes to attract potential suitors for a summer transfer.
